Your First HYROX in Qatar: The Ultimate Beginner’s Guide by Coach Tatan

So, you’ve seen the videos of athletes pushing sleds and tossing wall balls at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center (DECC), and you’ve finally decided: 2026 is the year you tackle HYROX. Whether you are a regular at AFLETE GYM Doha or someone just starting their fitness journey, HYROX is the ultimate test of functional fitness.

As a personal trainer in Qatar, I’ve seen many athletes dive headfirst into the ‘World Series of Fitness Racing’ without a proper plan. While the atmosphere in Doha is electric, the race is grueling. This guide, powered by the Watatan app, will break down the stations, provide a structured 8-week training plan, and show you how to leverage online coaching to cross that finish line with a smile.

What is HYROX? The Format Explained

HYROX is consistent globally, which is what makes it so addictive. The race consists of eight 1km runs, each followed by one functional workout station.

  1. 1km Run
  2. 1000m SkiErg
  3. 1km Run
  4. 50m Sled Push
  5. 1km Run
  6. 50m Sled Pull
  7. 1km Run
  8. 80m Burpee Broad Jumps
  9. 1km Run
  10. 1000m Row
  11. 1km Run
  12. 200m Farmers Carry
  13. 1km Run
  14. 100m Sandbag Lunges
  15. 1km Run
  16. 75 or 100 Wall Balls

The 8 HYROX Stations: Coach Tatan’s Expert Tips

1. SkiErg & Rowing

These are your engine builders. In the Doha heat, indoor training on these machines is a staple. Focus on a consistent stroke rate rather than a sprint. In the Watatan app, we track your 500m split times to ensure you aren't gassing out too early.

2. Sled Push & Pull

This is where the race truly begins. At AFLETE GYM Doha, we practice these on specific turf to mimic race conditions. Keep your hips low on the push and use your body weight on the pull. This is pure lower-body power.

3. Burpee Broad Jumps

This is the most hated station for a reason. It’s about rhythm. Don’t jump as far as possible every time; find a distance you can maintain without stopping your heart rate.

4. Farmers Carry & Sandbag Lunges

Grip strength is key here. Many residents in Qatar spend a lot of time at desks; we need to build that functional carry strength. Use the Watatan calorie tracker to ensure you're eating enough protein to support this muscle growth.

5. Wall Balls

The finisher. Your legs will be heavy, and your lungs will be burning. Practice staying upright and using your legs to drive the ball, not just your arms.

The 8-Week HYROX Training Plan for Beginners

If you want to succeed, you can't just 'wing it.' Here is a simplified version of the specialized programming I provide through online coaching.

Phase 1: Weeks 1-3 (Building the Base)

  • Monday: 5km Recovery Run + Core work.
  • Tuesday: Functional Strength at the gym (Squats, Deadlifts, Overhead Press).
  • Wednesday: Rest or active recovery (a walk on the Doha Corniche).
  • Thursday: HYROX Simulation (Run 1km, 500m Row, Run 1km, 50m Sled Push).
  • Friday: High-intensity interval training (HIIT).
  • Saturday: Long slow run (8-10km).
  • Sunday: Rest.

Phase 2: Weeks 4-6 (Strength & Stamina)

In this phase, we increase the weight on the sleds and the distance of the carries. This is where your fitness coach helps you adjust volume based on your recovery markers in the Watatan app.

Phase 3: Weeks 7-8 (Taper & Race Strategy)

We reduce the volume but keep the intensity high. We focus on 'compromised running'—learning how to run fast immediately after a heavy leg station.

Nutrition: Fueling for Success in Qatar

Training for HYROX in Doha’s climate requires a specific approach to hydration and nutrition. You aren't just training; you are sweating out essential minerals.

  • Calorie Tracking: Use the Watatan calorie tracker to maintain a slight surplus or maintenance level. HYROX is not the time for a heavy caloric deficit.
  • Protein Intake: Aim for 1.8g to 2.2g of protein per kg of body weight to repair muscle tissue.
  • Hydration: Supplement with electrolytes. The humidity in Qatar can lead to cramping during the Sled Pull or Wall Balls if you aren't careful.
